Agree with most of what was said but I'm not so sure about the charge to switch plans... I'm currently with Fido, have been for four years and have switched plans 3 times... with no penalty. All three times have been in the middle of contracts. It's been advertised quite a bit in their literature, that you can switch plans anytime. I also don't think they'll charge existing customers more for an iPhone, they'll just get them to renew their contracts, it will pay off.... but you never know I guess.

Think $90 plans, possibly not including SAF:

http://www.financialpost.com/story.html?id=592261

With the introduction of the 3G iPhone and its application store on July 11, Mr. Mohamed estimated the device will bring about $90 in blended ARPU to the company, a reflection of how important wireless broadband adoption will be to the bottom lines of telecom providers.

$199 USD or CDN, will likely be ONLY for NEW customers.

I've been with Rogers Wireless for coming on 6 years now, and I typically spend about $400 per month on services (2 BlackBerrys, before employee discount).

Recently, I wanted to discover what the upgrade cost would be to move from the 8100 to the 8120 Pearl.

New customer: $149.

Me: $425.

It would be cheaper to cancel my contract, pay the ECF, and get the new customer price, than it would be to upgrade!

I doubt that any existing Rogers customer is going to see anything as low as $199 or $299. Those prices are for new customers. And try to threaten your churning to Bell or Telus....they don't have iPhone.

I should definitely take bets on the subject of "basic plan price." The problem is that the AT&T plans in the States aren't even comparable to what we get here from anyone: for $60, they start at 450 minutes with unlimited network calling (and they roll over for up to a year if you don't use them all), 5000 evening/weekend minutes, 200 text messages sent and voicemail. All minutes work nationwide in the US, so there are no long distance charges either.

Oh, and unlimited data.

Some base plans on Rogers only offer 50 daytime minutes to start, and from what I see the highest end consumer plan gives 250+100 "bonus" daytime minutes per month. Weak sauce.

I would like to know how craptastically Rogers is going to charge consumers on this one. Apple should have never sign anything with a monopolist that is Ted Rogers. My guess of the iPhone monthly plan at Rogers will not cost less than $80 a month here in Canada.
