A few years late, but Half-Life 2 makes me ill.

I’ve just purchased the Orange Box from Steam, given that it’s now priced down to a quite reasonable $29.99. Unfortunately I recall the last time I borrowed a Steam account to play the game and suffered incredible motion sickness after about an hour of playtime.

The problem isn’t the refresh rate – it’s the field of view, which is 75 degrees. This is much narrower than the 90 degrees typical to most first person shooters, and the problem is exacerbated on a large monitor with a decent video card.

For my own reference, here’s how to fix this problem:

  • Click Options / Keyboard / Advanced and check the “Enable developer console (~) key” box.
  • Return to the game.
  • Call up the console by pressing the tilde (~) key and type the following commands:
    sv_cheats 1
    default_fov 90
    fov 90

(Updated Feb. 3/09 to include default_fov command.)

    That’s inaccurate. Dumbass.

What exactly are you claiming is inaccurate?

That’s like reading a summary of a book, and then a review of said book, and then stating “That’s inaccurate”. Nobody knows which one you meant.

Learn to clearly identify your subject when using pronouns. Dumbass.

Added the default_fov command to be more accurate, for Dave who has clearly never played HL2.

Sorry for the late comment, but I believe there’s an option in the video settings (perhaps under “advanced”) for changing the field of view. It can go from 75 – 90, as far as I know….

Warren is correct, the easiest way to fix this is from the video settings menu under the advanced tab. That’s also where you can tweak the game to look orgasmically awesome
